Many people wonder, "What is a School Counselor, exactly?
A School Counselor is someone who: - Has a Master's Degree with a focus on mental health, & is certified in Counseling & Student Services - Is a resource for ALL students, staff & families of Dora R-III - Talks to students, both individually & in a small group setting, to help them problem solve - Helps students adjust to life changing events they are facing ormay face in their lifetime - Assists students in developing positive decision making skills - Supports students in their academic journey, as well as their post-high school endeavors - Enhances the learning environment for everyone at Dora R-III, including students, teachers & parents - Listens & may provide students, staff & families options/resources to problem solve academic, social/emotional, & career issues
Long story short, I work as someone who helps students with their academic goals, social/emotional growth & career paths!
School Counselors are professional educators with a mental health perspective who understand & respond to the challenges presented by today’s diverse student population. They don’t work in isolation; rather they are integral to the total educational program.
